OG Juan Perez’s Weekend Celebration Goes Viral

During last Presidents’ Day weekend, hip-hop icon and business mogul, Shawn “JAY-Z” Carter, helped his buddy Juan “OG” Perez lavishly celebrate his 50th birthday. The celebratory crew included OG Juan’s wife, Desiree Perez, and several other close-knit friends. They began the night at Zuma, Midtown’s world-famous contemporary Japanese restaurant, and feasted on nearly $13,000 worth of food including sushi, lobster and steak. While the night was still young, the birthday celebration made its way to Made in Mexico, a stylish nightclub and Mexican eatery. As OG Juan and crew partied it up, JAY-Z decided it was time for everyone to have a little bottle of bubbly and racked up a $9,000 tab in D’USSE cognac.

The last stop for the party-goers actually became virally famous. JAY-Z bought 40 bottles of Ace of Spades Rosé for everyone, including the nearby tables at the Playroom Nightclub during the wee hours of Monday. The receipt was immediately posted online and it totaled exactly $91,000, including the tip. OG Juan’s 50th year was perhaps one of the biggest splurges we’ve seen in a long time. He and his wife have been close friends with JAY-Z for over 20 years. OG Juan currently serves as the president and CEO of Roc Nation Sports, a new sports management division of Roc Nation, LLC. The company works to heighten the careers of star athletes, both on and off the field. As the new head, OG Juan oversees the endorsement deals, branding strategies, media relations and more.

“Sick Boy” is a Dialogue with Oneself

The Chainsmokers latest single “Sick Boy,” gives a common social theme and turns it on its head for the sake of revealing the narcissism that drives a lot of social media. “Sick Boy” song poses another question for the Chainsmokers who seek to remain current and true to their desire to tell in their music and lyrics. The events that revolve around their lives and their own experiences of the events is at the heart of who they want to be. “Sick Boy” is an expression of wanting to be faithful to the characters they want to play in their songs and the values they want to contribute to others. Taggart said in a recent interview with Ryan Seacrest “it’s not just about writing a catchy song,” but more about “telling our story,” to others. The music and the video in “Sick Boy” give it a near ominous tone, but the message is one that Taggart calls ” a “dialogue with oneself.” That dialogue is at times both driven by the anxiety of a world motivated by social media statistics and algorithms; on the other hand, the Chainsmokers know the answer lies in staying true to who they are and not getting lost in others false expectations.

Chainsmokers Early Beginnings

Adam Pall and Drew Taggart, known as the Chainsmokers are relatively new to the music scene. Their first round of success came when they teamed up with the Indie artist Priyanka Chopra in 2012 and produced their first single “Erase;” their “The People” followed in 2013. Since then Pall and Taggart have broken away and formed their form of DJ Pop. A song that launched them into social media was “Selfie,” and also an appearance on American Idol with Ryan Seacrest. Pall and Taggart came together after word got around that Pall was trying to locate another member of his group. Taggart heard about it thru a mutual friend of Adam Alpert who was producing Pall at the time. Taggart lost no time in contacting Pall, and the two immediately became close collaborators and formed the Chainsmokers.

Yesterday the Chainsmokers released “Closer”, which is their new track. The track is highly anticipated and features their new star named Halsey. The thing that makes this song unique is that Andrew Taggart is singing, unlike in “Roses” and “Don’t Let Me Down”.

Typically an artists that sings in their own song is common place. But this is unexpected for the pair of Alex and Andrew, along with their DJ Contemporaries. They typically rely on vocalists and songwriters to add a human element to their electronic compositions. This desire to personalize their brand of electronic dance music coincides with the desire and ambition to become recognized artists with emotions, feelings, and ideas, as opposed to beat craters who hide behind a DJ booth all of the time. There are artists such as deadman5 who wish to relatively remain anonymous, and do so by hiding behind synths and drops. Andre and Alex strive to make themselves part of their music, which is uncommon in an industry and music genre that is typically devoid of emotion.

Alex Pall was a DJ while he was growing up, and it was a part time job for him, as well as a hobby. He was mainly DJing in the New York City area, and one day he realized inside of an art gallery that since he was spending so much time DJing, he wanted t make it into a career. He was working with his manager, who is the same manager that also introduced him to Andrew. They met and began to work, and Andrew moved from Maine. Alex quit his job, and decided to become a DJ full time, and that is where this all began to take form.

Andrew was in college right before he met Alex, and he was beginning to take an interest in DJing. At the time, the genre was not very popular, and so Alex had peers who would make fun of him for his passion for electronic music. By the end of college, all those same people were truly passionate about the music and listened to it.
